Proposed New Tests of Special Relativity and Equivalence Principle Using a Gyroscope

چکیده
We propose two new kinds of tests for equivalence principle and special relativity by using rotating extended bodies. The first test is based on the massvelocity relation in special relativity and the equivalence principle. The second test depends upon the spin-coupling between the rotating bodies. These tests could be done in a rotating torsion balance experiment or a free-fall experiment by comparing a rotating body and an irrotational body.

In special relativity a gyroscope that is suspended in a torque-free manner will precess as it is moved along a curved path relative to an inertial frame S. We explain this effect, which is known as Thomas precession, by considering a real grid that moves along with the gyroscope, and that by definition is not rotating as observed from its own momentary inertial rest frame. From the basic prope...
متن کاملGeneral relativity at 75: how right was einstein?
The status of experimental tests of general relativity is reviewed on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. Einstein's equivalence principle is well supported by experiments such as the Eötvös experiment, tests of special relativity, and the gravitational redshift experiment. Tests of general relativity have reached high precision, including the light deflection and the perihelion advance of Me...
متن کاملGravitational Effects of Rotating Bodies ∗
We study two type effects of gravitational field on mechanical gyroscopes (i.e. rotating extended bodies). The first depends on special relativity and equivalence principle. The second is related to the coupling (i.e. a new force) between the spins of mechanical gyroscopes, which would violate the equivalent principle. In order to give a theoretical prediction to the second we suggest a spin-sp...
متن کاملEinstein's Equivalence Principle Has Three Further Implications Besides Affecting Time_T-L-M-Ch Theorem
General relativity is notoriously difficult to interpret. A "return to the mothers" is proposed to better understand the gothic-R theorem of the Schwarzschild metric of general relativity. It is shown that the new finding is already implicit in Einstein's equivalence principle of 1907 and hence in special relativity (with acceleration). The TeLeMaCh theorem, named onomatopoetically after Telema...
متن کاملThe Principle of Relativity: From Ungar’s Gyrolanguage for Physics to Weaving Computation in Mathematics
This paper extends the scope of algebraic computation based on a non standard $times$ to the more basic case of a non standard $+$, where standard means associative and commutative. Two physically meaningful examples of a non standard $+$ are provided by the observation of motion in Special Relativity, from either outside (3D) or inside (2D or more), We revisit the ``gyro''-theory ...
